The Right Way of Placing Food in the Refrigerator
We’ve prepared some practical tips for storing food in the refrigerator, the right way. I know we are all busy, rushing to do things without being concerned whether we do it properly or not as long as it is done fast. Well, properly placed food in the fridge can save you time and money. How? By paying attention to lower the risk of decay, mold, odors and bacteria, food will be kept fresh longer, you won’t have to clean your fridge as often as you used to and it will save you time and money, meaning you won’t have to buy the same things twice. In other words, the risk of contamination will be reduced and your food will last longer. Did you know that yearly, we are throwing over 600 $ worth of food in the trash? Zone your food and extend the life of your groceries.
The bottom shelf is reserved for storing raw meat, fish and poultry because it’s the coldest part of the fridge. Keep the meat in sealed packages and do not re-wrap them. That will keep it bacteria free. If you are defrosting meat in more natural way by moving it from the freezer into the fridge, place a plate underneath to lessen the risk of raw juices dripping onto other food.
This is the warmest part of the fridge and make sure it is reserved for foods such as yogurt, cheese and sauces. Milk placed on the top shelf will last longer than it would in the door rack. Too much door opening makes the door rack exposed to hot air.

This is the place for leftovers. Place them in airtight plastic containers. Divide the leftovers in few smaller containers so they can cool easily. If you open a can, do not by any means leave the rest of the food in the can. Immediately transfer it in a plastic container.
Salad Crisper Drawers – Food Safety Temperature
The drawer is the best place for storing vegetables and fruit. Do not wash leafy greens before putting them in the fridge. Wash them right before you’re meaning to use them. Keep fruits separately from the vegetables. Foods like lettuce and spinach can spoil easily so it’s the best way to keep them in a loosely wrapped plastic bag. Punch some holes on the bag so the leaves would breathe without losing their moisture. Cucumbers should be kept at 12 °C, so they wouldn’t turn soft. You can also put them in a paper bag.
Eggs, condiments, jam and fruit juice are put on the door racks. Reserve the lidded compartment for keeping butter. Also, you can place dressings and sauces on the door.
Don’t overfill your fridge and in the same time don’t keep it empty, since cool air should circulate in a proper way. As you open the door, the inside temperature changes. 30 seconds of opened door leads to change of 5-10 degrees. About 15 minutes are needed for the fridge to return its initial temperature back to low.
