Why You Should Squat When You Poop Instead of Sitting Down
Did you know that toilet posture can affect your health? Yes, that is right! The usual way we poop by sitting on the toilet can cause many health issues. The modern toilet shell was created by the western civilization for relaxation and luxury. However, the position you sit on the toilet may cause many problems like constipation, hemorrhoids, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulosis and colon cancer.
According to the studies conducted by the scientists from the Pelvic Floor Clinic at Stanford University, physiologically people are designed to squat. The colon cannot be fully relaxed when in sitting position. The squatting position is more natural and can help you avoid many health problems. In a squatting position the bend straightens out and you can defecate easier.
Squat When You Poop Instead of Sitting Down
People who don’t eat fiber and don’t drink water enough often have problems with hard stool. Additionally, sitting on the toilet does not allow the rectum to relax fully, and improper posture gets in the way of pooping properly. That can cause your stool to be hard, dry and difficult to eliminate, which is a sign of constipation. As a result, you are putting a lot of pressure to get the hard stools out and that causes hemorrhoids.
The urination process for women is made more difficult since the muscles are not relaxed enough. That can cause many urinary infections. Squatting causes the bladder to be emptied more completely, rather than when you sit on the toilet. It also makes the urinary tract infections less frequent and less intense.
Moreover, if you are in the improper defecating position the fecal matter builds up in the colon, and your body does not absorb all the necessary nutrients from the food you are eating. As a result, we do not have enough energy and can lead to many colon diseases and even colon cancer.
You will also have problems with the pelvic floor due to improper toilet posture. If you sit on the toilet you are putting extra pressure on the anorectal angle of the colon, and the lower part of the colon drops and protrudes into the wall of the vagina.
Why You Should Squat When You Poop
There has been a study conducted on around 30 people in 2003. They were divided in three groups and each group was given instructions on how to poop. One group had to sit on a high toilet, one on the low toilet, and the last one had to squat. The test confirmed that the group who were squatting shortened the pooping time for 1 minute then the rest of the groups.
Squatting definitely makes the elimination process easier. When we are standing the puborectalic muscles trap the colon and that causes decal continence, until you need to go to the toilet. When we sit on the toilet while defecating, our muscles are partially relaxed. Compared to when we squat, the muscles are fully relaxed because the colon is straight.
Moreover, in a 1964 medical text called Bockus’s Gastroenterology it has been written that in order for people to take up the natural position for eliminating fecalia, they need to fix the thighs upon the abdomen so the colon will take up its natural straightened position.
Squatting while defecating has many health benefits:
- The elimination process is faster and made much easier.
- When you sit the small intestine is contaminated with waste, and squatting prevents the waste from entering the small intestine.
- The natural delivery process is made easier in pregnant women since the uterus is not pressured if they are squatting while using the toilet.
- The pelvic floor and the pelvic nerves that control the prostate, the bladder, the uterus, and sexuality are protected since squatting prevents their starching and damaging.
- Decreases the risk of getting colon cancer since the stagnation is prevented.
